    Bragging on God

Sometimes, I just have to brag on God.  Yes, I agree that we should always be telling about the amazing wonders God is doing in our lives and those around us. No argument there.  But, today, I just need to brag a bit more through three recent stories. A friend of ours is a student here at Liberty and is from India. He hasn’t been back home to see family and friends for over two years.  He told me recently that while he was on a weekend tour with the Liberty worship choir LU Praise, he stayed in a local host home.  While there, the host couple asked him about…

    Are You Afraid?

Have you ever been afraid of something? I mean really afraid? When I was a kid, I spent a night at my Grandma Lenehan’s house.  My grandfather had passed away a few years before, so it was just her.  There was a kitchen, dining and living rooms and two bedrooms on the first floor, with a bathroom in the middle. The night I visited Grandma, I had to sleep in the living room. I don’t remember why, but that’s where Grandma told me to sleep. After I laid down, I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.  It was dark enough, but I kept hearing strange noises. Creaking, grunting, bumping, more creaking. …

    I’ll Pray for You

Written by Dave Lenehan   “I’ll be praying for you.”  You heard that from someone before, right? Of course. We all have.  And my guess is that most of us have said that to someone, usually someone close to us when they’ve shared a matter, a need that they wanted us to bring before God in prayer. “Yes, I’ll pray for you.”  The problem is, we don’t always do it, do we? I’m pointing my fingers at myself when I ask that question, because loads of people have asked me that question and too often I have only thought about praying for someone, for that request, right then at…

    Take Me To Your Leader

Written by Dave Lenehan   In 1996, the Christian band The Newsboys released their sixth studio album, Take Me to Your Leader. The title track and accompanying video played off of the success of an alien/space theme with matching retro space uniforms, spaceship looking set pieces and a moonlike landscape (but with flowers and water).  The lyrics, written by Newsboy Peter Furler and long-time collaborator, satirist and fellow musician Steve Taylor, point out that how we live as followers of our leader, Jesus, can truly make an impact on those who interact with us.   “He says: I don’t know why you care I don’t know what’s out there I don’t know how…

    Without Jesus?

Written by Dave Lenehan   Over the holidays, we got together with our former church small group. We hadn’t been together for months and, as you might guess, a lot had happened in our combined lives over time. We gathered at one of our host homes to catch up on life and pray together.  As each couple seated around the table shared one or two stories of a wayward adult child or other relative, it would have been easy to get weighed down with the heaviness of the conversation.   You know those stories.  You’ve heard ones of someone close to you who has totally walked away from or…

    Dust Off The Sword

Written by Dave Lenehan You’ve got to admit that swords are cool.  Maybe it’s because we don’t see them in use on a daily basis (and that’s probably a good thing). Perhaps it’s because our first memory of seeing or even holding a sword likely has a cool story to go along with the blade’s cool factor (watching Braveheart, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings or Narnia included). When I was in high school, I won newspaper Carrier of the Year from our local Cape Cod Times  through Parade magazine; that award carried with it an all-expense-paid trip to Spain for 10 days.  I had only flown a few times in my life and never out…

    Reunion Tours and Dandelions

Written by Dave Lenehan   I think we all have a favorite band that we would love to see embark on a reunion tour.  Many have asked Sir Paul and Ringo to relive the Beatles.  Many of the rock bands of the 70s and 80s continue to have immense success with all new tours.  The production trade mags attest to that. Christian music fans finally experienced the long-awaited dcTalk reunion during the band’s special boat cruise last year. Now there are rumors of Cruise Part II coming up this summer. One band I’ll never forget that held a brief reunion tour a few years ago was the ska band Five Iron…

Going to See the Big Guy… Maybe?

Written by Dave Lenehan   “Going To See the Big Guy, Maybe.”  Sounds like an odd thing to say, doesn’t it?  I didn’t see it on a sign or in front of a church or at a flea market next to an old Texaco sign.  Those odd words are the epitaph on a veteran’s grave marker at the National Cemetery at Otis Air National Guard base on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.  My Dad Roger is buried in the same section (45) as this man. How did I come across such an strange collection of last words?  When I visit my Dad’s gravesite, I like to walk around his section and read…
