Hebrews 11:8-16 speaks of the sojourning of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It says that they departed their homeland and sojourned in the land of promise. Yet it goes on to say that what they really sought was “the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God” (Heb.11:10). Lest we mistake this city for the physical Jerusalem in the land of Israel, the writer of Hebrews makes clear that this city the people of God seek is not a temporal earthly metropolis, but rather an eternal heavenly city:
These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared for them a city. (Hebrews 11:13–16 ESV)
As citizens of this kingdom of the heavens we serve as ambassadors to the world representing Christ while also calling others to surrender their lives to the King, that is Jesus the Christ. We proclaim the good news that in Christ the kingdom has come near to those who were far off. That by giving oneself completely over to Christ heart, mind, body and soul recognizing and professing Him Savior, King, Lord, and God in the flesh one enters into the salvation He offers by the shedding of His blood for the forgiveness of sins. Amen.
