The Greatest Gift

Written by Dave Lenehan

Someone asked me recently, “what was the best present you’ve ever received?”  I thought for a few minutes. A few gifts I received as a kid first came to mind.  But they weren’t it.  Then it struck me: the scooter!

When I worked as the Conference Director for Youth for Christ in upstate New York, I did a LOT of walking during our annual youth conference weekends.  My steps took me from the hotel to the city center to my hotel room and then back to the city center. I walked that path scores of times.  During one of the last general sessions, where all of the students and youth leaders in attendance were gathered in the city center meeting room, my fellow YFC staff surprised me.

They called me to the stage and presented me with…a Razor Scooter.  I was stunned.  Their gift was thoughtful and very practical.  I rode it proudly down the aisle toward the back doors while the audience cheered.  I knew this gift could really change things for me for the better on conference weekends.  And it did, at least for the one day the hotel staff actually let me ride it around in their hallways.

What about the greatest gift of all time?

“On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matt. 2:11, NIV).

“For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”(Rom. 5:17, NIV).

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23, NIV).

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (James 1:17, NIV).

“The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life” (Rev. 22:17, NIV).

This season, this month we celebrate THE most incredible gift ever given to anyone on this planet…and ever given to each and every one of us. We celebrate the gift of God the Father, his son Jesus Christ, sent to our world to die in our place and to pay the penalty for our sin. He gave us this gift so that, when we believe in Him and surrender our lives to Him, we are forgiven, we are renewed, we are redeemed.

Praise Him for the greatest gift of all!
